Find a collectable car in Aust under 5 grand challenge.

Gday team,

I will leave the old holden boys to play with there toys so we can give this one a crack if you are keen.

In true top gear style, the challenge is set - very simple rules:

Try + find/buy a collectable/unique classic car (cut off is 1980 to make it harder) under $5000 bucks.

Show us all what you've seen or what you got in the shed that you really paid less than 5 grand for.
no bullsh*t as we all know what cars cost these days....

Must be licd + driveable - no dodgey half arsed projects - must able to drive on any Aust road today.

Lets see who the king of vintage car bargains really is!!!!!

P.S - my example is Gumtree Perth - 1980 Ford Escort 4 dr - $4,500 ono - full lic - mtr runs.

Here's my 71 jag xj6 with a warm 308/trimatic when i bought it about 6 or 7 years ago. Paid $2500, drove her for 6 months or so then parked her to do a tidy up. Had a kid and the jag got pushed to the side. She got booted from the carport a year or two ago and now she looks real shabby, runs beautiful. A few weekends with the welder and fresh paint she'll be good to go. If only i had the time.

nice rig moto - I had a look at them this morning - a couple of stock units for 5k on perth dumtree.

saw some with the trusty 350 chev but 308 red mtr would be a nice cruiser - at 7k price point.

bugger all collectables for 5k - I did see a nice blue TE Cortina for 4k.

My last VW bug is a definite collectable. 1968 (which was the first year they released them) stickshift auto (semi automatic) beetle. Similar to a z50 or postie, no clutch but manual gearshift, only 3 speeds plus reverse but you could go from 0 to around 80kmh in the mid range gear, you touch the gear lever and the clutch goes in with a vacuum actuated ram, then drives through a torque converter powered by a pump piggybacked off the stock oil pump on the motor, very hard to find a good running one and many have been changed to manual or had the IRS floor pans harvested for buggies.

The price - running, registered for just under 6 months and roadworthy $2600. Then he gives me the trailer load of spares including 3 gearboxes, full sets of auto engine hardware and a folder with just about every receipt for the car from new, original glovebox manual and even every 1968 sales brochure that was published for the model. So I think that qualifies as its close to half the budget.

shoot kombi - ya done good there man - I had thoughts of a herbie faker - it will still turn heads.
top knowledge there - had no idea about semi auto herbies - man they would be rare as rocking
horse poo. cant beat air cooled power in the rear.

bought it - he lost his job a week after buying it - I asked how much he wants - he tells me 3 grand.
I tell him to f off - time to move on.....

I just keep lookin every night for a vintage collectable bargain - nothing but fresh air on toast
on dumtree WA - gotta talk to people who talk to other people etc......

pity my suzi mighty boy is 1985 - challenge is before 1980 - it owes me 2 grand.....

gav, do you remember the mtt buses in Perth in the 70's ? Sounds like the same gearbox set up as vw

then the crazy dude on the 10 spd racer use to follow us up beaufort st - wolfman or caveman??
Adrian is his real name - everybody in Perth knows who he is. I still see him on that f n bike from
time to time - he looks the same - pedals that bike real quick with no shoes or slippers.

we use to stick our head out the window and scream at him - then he scream back at us twice
as loud - then he speed up on his bike to catch the bus - us kids use to sh*t ourselves in case
he caught that green + white MTT bus.....

enough of that - yes the bus driver use to take his foot of the gas, shift into a neutral spot for
a second, then back into the next gear - how do I know this stuff - cause I sit in the first bus
seat - not cool to even go half way down let alone the back of the bus - no chance for little gav.
