    just wondering.....

    Hi Guys,

I know there are many knowledgeable people on this website who over the years may have stripped , rebuilt and tuned may small Honda engines, so this may be a stupid question but I was kinda wondering is it possible to diagnose a problem with an engine just by listening to it at idle ?

The reason why Iím asking is a have a little QA which has been rebuilt for me a couple of times of the years and during the last rebuild I purchased just about every new and replaceable engine part available on instruction by the fella who rebuilt,it but on idle it still has an loud annoying tick.

This is doing my head in as my buddy recently picked up a barn find for $400 and his motor is as original and is quiet as mouse.

    Any help would be appreciated.

You can try to isolate exactly where the noise is coming from which can be challenging as noise can transfer from part to part in an engine, I use a mechanics stethoscope or you can also use a screwdriver and place it against the motor and your ear against the screwdriver handle and you will be able to hear quite well what is going on.

    Mechanics Stethoscope.png

Sit the bike on a stand and let it idle while operating the transmission and clutch to see if you can pinpoint when the noise gets better or worse, process of elimination.

    Cheers

I regularly get customers sending me recordings of the sounds their bikes are making or they will have their bike up on the Milk Crate dyno revving it with the phone next to it asking "What does that sound like"

I usually say that the most important sense that we have in regard to bike tuning or fault diagnosis is our 6th sense and that is Common Sense, which is that it makes it a lot easier if I was actually there with you to use all of my other senses

    Cheers

check ya rocker arms... push rod adjustment or sorst leak?
You have two parts of brain, 'left' and 'right'. In the left side, there's nothing right. In the right side, there's nothing left.

I rebuilt a z50 motor awhile back and it had a nasty noise in the top end. Turned out to be a poor casting of the top of the piston, it was just,, and only just, slapping the head.
Couple of swipes with a flat file,,, problem solved.

I thought by riding it around for awhile it would come good!
But no amount of slapping was going to make my piston quiet.

you need to work out if the knock is same as the rpm or 1/2 the rpm .It will narrow the search.

Umm ,, theres a good comeback in there somewhere,,,but I probably should not post it ,,,

Could always bung a long handle screwdriver behind your ear and place it on the engine in various spots ,, might give you an idea on its location.
